Panic Alarm Strips

Wherever there is contact between citizens and authority, there is a risk of conflict, personal confrontation and even violence. Nowhere is this more relevant than in custodial situations.

In these circumstances it can be (literally) of vital importance to end any disturbance and restore order as quickly as possible. It is here that a reliable press-at-any-point panic strip, acting as a call for assistance, can justify its existence. A panic strip can be mounted on a wall at a convenient height from the floor and can be virtually any length, giving a big advantage over individual push buttons, which can be out of reach at the crucial time.

An optional design of panic strip can take that accessibility a stage further. High profile panic strips have a sensitive area that protrudes slightly outside the mounting profile. This is useful in situations where, for example, an attacker pins the arms of a victim preventing them from pressing the panic strip normally. If the victim can manage to make either of them bump into the panic strip, this will be sufficient to activate the alarm. In reality, though, the majority of panic strips in use have a standard profile that will not activate an alarm by simply bumping into them. This avoids the nuisance of inadvertent alarms due to accidental operation of the strip.

It is important, for a couple of reasons, that the panic strip should be durable and tamperproof. Obviously, they should not be easy to vandalise; a non-functioning panic strip offers no protection at all to employees. Even More, they should not be easy to disassemble; a panic strip could contain long, very flexible components, which could easily become offensive ligatures if they got into the wrong hands.

It is the nature of these applications that panic strips are often installed in isolated locations. It is sometimes an advantage to have “reassurance feedback” to show that operating an alarm actuator actually has done something. For example, if someone initiates an alarm and the alarm system responds by activating a local sound or light signal that can be seen or heard by the person who initiated the alarm, he or she knows that the call for assistance was made correctly. Even better, if  the alarm signal can be changed when someone acknowledges it, the person knows that help is now on its way. DaDo panic strips,  manufactured by Tapeswitch Ltd, have the capability to have LEDs built into the panic  strip. This is a very neat way of providing visible reassurance feedback. For example, some alarm systems will make the LEDs on the panic strip flash immediately it is pushed, and then change to a constant signal when the call for assistance is acknowledged. The protection that panic strips offer need not be limited to indoor applications. Frequently, detained persons have to be transferred from vehicles across open-air spaces into custody.

The realisation of the significance of this transit into the custody building can be very stressful for the detainee and is a potential flashpoint for a violent reaction. A panic strip on the outside of the building can be very useful but it must, of course, be weatherproof.

DaDo panic strips already use a waterproof insert switch, rated to IP65, which will not be detrimentally affected by rain or snow and so this kind of panic strip is ideal for this type of application without modification. The usefulness of panic strips are not restricted to custodial situations. As mentioned earlier, wherever there is contact between the public and authority, there is a chance of conflict. The availability of panic strips in some public offices have prevented the deterioration of many potentially dangerous situations and protected many people from serious harm.
