Family owned retirement homes in Kent and Surrey - Nightingales Retirement Care

Pensioners opt out of traditional luxury retirement towns – and move to Bromley, instead

Elderly people looking to enjoy their golden years in style are dropping plans to move to the seaside and turning to boutique retirement homes inland instead.

Nettlestead Retirement Home in Bromley, one of two homes run by the family-owned Nightingales Retirement Care www.nightingales.co.uk, has reported 60 per cent more enquiries since January compared to the same period last year.

“Interest has really shot up,” says Sarah Bruce, Nightingales co-owner.

“Maybe it’s because of our reputation for good food, beautiful accommodation and boutique-hotel style living, or perhaps the weak pound has played a part.”

Nettlestead caters for the fastest-growing age group in the UK – the over 80s. And unlike traditional retirement homes,

Nettlestead supplies guests with sherry and home-cooked food in comfortable, hotel-style accommodation.

“Our residents have worked hard all their life – and they want to enjoy their retirement,” says Bruce.

Nettlestead is set in an elegantly refurbished Victorian property which was formerly home to a Lord Mayor of London.

Each bedroom is individually designed, and incorporates the specialist facilities needed by elderly guests.

“We have several guests who come to Nettlestead just for holidays because of the boutique hotel treatment,” says Bruce.

“Our guests do have some care needs, which we attend to, but we don’t want to remind them of that all the time. We want them to feel as relaxed as they would in their own homes.”

Nettlestead even allows potential guests to stay for up to a week free of charge, to help them decide whether or not to move in. Nettlestead’s qualified care staff can also provide home visits, allowing more independent people the option of remaining in their own homes.
