Furniture and Equipment for Custodial Environments - Leisure Engineering Projects
Leisure Engineering Projects Ltd, based nr Peterborough, have been trading since 1990, and have been involved in the provision and installation of furniture and equipment into custodial and institutional environments for over 5 years.

During this period LEP have gained a rapidly expanding list of main contractor and direct custodial establishment clientele who appreciate the capabilities and advantages of the Trespa material that LEP utilise, and the flexible approach employed by LEP to arrive at technically and commercially acceptable solutions to their individual projects. Recent notable projects include:-

HMP Barlinnie, Glasgow

LEP manufactured and installed Trespa in-cell furniture for the refurbishment upgrades of Halls A, C and E at Barlinnie, totalling almost 600 cells; working closely with main contractors Carillion, and then Rok-Dickie. LEPs scope included manufacture and installation of a new WC cubicle, vanity unit, services riser, and bulkhead duct within each cell.

David Warren, LEP project director comments

The main difficulty to overcome for each of these projects was the differences within each of the individual Victorian vaulted prison cells. There was notable variation in the cell widths, heights, and vaulted ceiling contours. Fortunately, the fabrication techniques that we employ enabled us to accommodate these variations, allowing us to individually measure each cell and manufacture the constituent parts to meet the requirements. Each wing was completed on time and within budget.

Logford Immigration Removal Centre, Heathrow Working in close liaison with main contractor Skanska, LEP provided and installed a substantial amount of equipment for the project, including the beds (incorporating under-bed storage locker facility for the detainee), desks, shelves, and TV cabinets for the 300 cell facility. Also they devised and provided self-supporting bulkhead and air-plenum assemblies for each wing to fully enclose the services to each cell, whilst providing maintenance access panels, and support for the wing lighting, fire detectors & sprinkler systems. Shower & WC cubicles, ducts, and vanity units were also provided for each wing, and the gatehouse.

LEP have most recently been undertaking projects in the area of Mental Health, and the company are shortly due to complete work on the new Paddock Centre at Broadmoor Hospital with main contractor Costain.

Prior to contract commencement the bedroom furniture was subjected to stringent mock-up tests, including riot simulation, performed by WLMHT personnel.

LEPs scope includes beds, desk and storage facilities to each bedroom, and other specialist items such as vending and AV equipment enclosures, fire extinguisher boxes etc.

LEPs sales manager Phil Whiting commented Fully responding to the furniture strength and anti-ligature aspects of this project was obviously very important, due to the nature of the DSPD patients to be utilising the facility. The aesthetic considerations of the furniture, and ease of maintaining a hygienic environment were also of fundamental concern to the client. In this instance the client chose Trespa material with a Lime wood-effect finish.
