Join up for BNFs Healthy Eating Week at The Education Show

Following the success of its inaugural 2013 Healthy Eating Week, the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) will be at The Education Show, NEC Birmingham from 20-22 March, meeting teachers and registering schools for free participation in what promises to be an even bigger and better Healthy Eating Week initiative this year.

Over 2,030 schools, representing more than one million nursery, primary and secondary school children, have already signed-up for Healthy Eating Week 2014 (2-6 June), which has been designed to promote healthy eating, awareness of food provenance, and the benefits of physical activity, to children across the country.

Schools participating in BNF’s Healthy Eating Week have access to activity, assembly and tutorial ideas and resources, free posters and stickers, live cook-a-longs, live online presentations, mini-video lesson starters, and a certificate of participation.  They will also be able to take part in a BNF Healthy Eating Week competition.

Roy Ballam, Education Programme Manager at the British Nutrition Foundation, said: “In response to requests from schools that participated last year, we have devised five themes and embedded them into the free resources, to help teachers structure their 2014 Healthy Eating Weeks.  These themes are food origins; healthy active lifestyles; food and drink choices; meal occasions; food preparation and cooking.”

In 2013 over 27,500 school children also took part in BNF’s Healthy Eating Week survey, the largest of its kind, into eating behaviour and knowledge among UK children.  This year, BNF will be conducting a similar survey of children looking at behaviour in the context of mealtime occasions, as well as a brand new survey of teachers.

For more information and to register your school for Healthy Eating Week, please visit BNF on stand J25, at The Education Show, NEC Birmingham, 20-22 March, or visit www.healthyeatingweek.org.uk.

Healthy Eating Week is being developed by the British Nutrition Foundation and is supported by the Agriculture Horticulture Development Board (EBLEX, BPEX, Potato Council and DairyCo) and Seafish.

BNF was established 45 years ago and exists to deliver authoritative, evidence-based information on food and nutrition in the context of health and lifestyle. The Foundation’s work is conducted and communicated through a unique blend of nutrition science, education and media activities. BNF’s strong governance is broad-based but weighted towards the academic community.  BNF is a registered charity that attracts funding from a variety of sources, including contracts with the European Commission, national government departments and agencies; food producers and manufacturers, retailers and food service companies; grant providing bodies, trusts and other charities. Further details about our work, governance and funding can be found on our website (www.nutrition.org.uk) and in our Annual Reports.
