IPCC Investigating Alleged Custody Assault In Birmingham
The 28 year-old-man was arrested by police for alleged assault at an address in Birmingham on 25 December 2011 and was transported to Steelhouse Lane police station in Birmingham.
When being booked in at custody the man made a complaint to a custody sergeant that while in the police car he had been ‘slapped’. It is then alleged that the man was sworn at and moved to a cell and strip-searched by officers without being given any explanation. It is claimed he was then forcibly led naked to a specialist ‘drunk’ cell. While in the police cell the man, who was still without clothing, was found to be unconscious. An ambulance was called and he was taken to Birmingham City Hospital. The man was discharged from the hospital around three hours later and returned to police custody. It is believed the man had sustained some minor bruising.

West Midlands Police referred the complaint to the IPCC on 30 December 2011 and after brief assessment the IPCC decided to begin an independent investigation. Investigators are viewing CCTV footage from the custody suite and are contacting the complainant.
IPCC Commissioner Rachel Cerfontyne said: "While the man’s injuries were minor, the allegations made against a number of police officers about his treatment while in custody are serious and it is right that we carry out an independent investigation. We will be looking through relevant CCTV footage, speaking to the complainant and taking accounts from officers themselves to examine whether any force used by police was justifiable in the circumstances.”
