DuPont Building Innovations: a brief profile - DuPont

Sustainability, durability and safety are crucial challenges in the modern built environment, for which DuPont offers a number of pioneering high-performance solutions. These include, among the many, DuPont™ Corian® solid surfaces, DuPont® Zodiaq® quartz surfaces, DuPont™ Tyvek® breather membranes, DuPont™ Energain® energy-saving thermal mass system (based on phase change material technology) and DuPont™ Climate Systems solutions.

DuPont Building Innovations is a strategic business unit dedicated to creating, developing and producing advanced materials and technologies and bringing those to the architecture and construction markets, for a variety of functional and decorative applications. A group of these products and systems have been designed specifically to enhance the energy-efficiency and integrity of the building envelope, offering a variety of technical and functional benefits combined with environmental and economic advantages. These are:

DuPont™ Energain® - a new concept in Phase Change Materials - this long-lasting solution for energy-efficient building could play a significant role in the evolution of construction techniques. Suitable for “low-inertia” structures such as timber, steel or aluminium framed buildings, DuPont™ Energain® is an innovative panel system which can be used to reduce temperature peaks by as much as 7 degrees C, thereby optimizing interior comfort levels.

DuPont™ Energain® significantly decreases air conditioning costs (by an average of 35%) and heating costs (about 15%) and can make a considerable contribution to the reduction of the carbon footprint of a building. The system consists of light-weight and easy-to-install panels of 1.0 m x 1.2 m in a 5,26 mm thickness.

DuPont™ Climate Systems offer an innovative solution for the building envelope, allowing savings in energy costs of up to 15% plus a more comfortable indoor climate year round. The system is based on two new, advanced materials: DuPont™ Tyvek® Enercor® metallised breather membranes for roofs and walls, which combine high reflectivity (low emissivity surfaces) with superior moisture diffusion capacity, and DuPont™ AirGuard®, a highly reflective metallised vapour control layer with an emissivity of possibly below 10%.

These two materials are designed to work together with traditional insulation products to create an air-tight building envelope, providing excellent protection against external weather conditions, interstitial condensation and internal thermal losses. The combination of DuPont™ Tyvek® Enercor® and DuPont™ AirGuard® boosts the insulation performance by up to 15%. DuPont™ Tyvek® Enercor® also blocks up to 85% of radiant heat in summer, helping to maintain interior comfort levels in conjunction with proper ventilation, while DuPont™ Airguard® reflects back up to 90% of the internal heat in winter.

.

Although sophisticated in terms of technology, DuPont™ Climate Systems are simple to install in both roof and wall and suitable for either new build or renovation projects.

DuPont™ Tyvek® is a 100% recyclable, nonwoven material that provides an excellent combination of barrier protection, durability and breathability. Unique in being the only single layer breather membrane on the market, DuPont™ Tyvek® is composed of millions of micro fibres. These “plexifilaments” are bonded together to make a “maze” that’s impermeable to water and yet allows water vapour to pass through the natural pores in the micro-fibre structure. Naturally vapour open but water-tight, robust, resistant to UV damage and general wear and tear, DuPont™ Tyvek® offers peace of mind with reliable protection and trouble-free installation. Since its invention by DuPont 40 years ago, its application in the building envelope has had an influence on the way many structures are designed, planned and built.
