DLA Piper, JW Marriott And The Prince's Trust Make The Big Society A Reality For Disadvantaged Youngsters
DLA Piper, in association with The Prince's Trust and JW Marriott Hotels, is proud to have launched 'Get into Hospitality'. This is a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative designed to give disadvantaged young people from The Prince's Trust access to work experience as they look to find careers in the hospitality and leisure sector. Working with our global client JW Marriott, at one of their most prestigious properties Grosvenor House, Park Lane, has provided an exceptional opportunity for the young trainees to learn about the industry at first hand. The inaugural 'Get into Hospitality' event was launched at Grosvenor House on 24 January. The programme introduces disadvantaged 16 to 25 year olds to the hospitality and leisure sector through a mixture of workshops and hands on learning. Areas covered during the two week course will include kitchen, restaurant, room service, housekeeping, back of house and engineering with a skills course on CV's and interview techniques.

Participants on the programme may have faced challenges in their life such as homelessness, long term unemployment, educational underachievement or contact with the Criminal Justice and care systems. The 'Get into' programme is their first opportunity to receive support in moving forward into employment. Elaine Radford Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at DLA Piper said: "I am immensely proud of DLA Piper's 13 year relationship with The Prince's Trust, and 'Get into Hospitality' will continue to build on this strong relationship. We have given hundreds of young people the chance to change their lives for the better. At a time when public sector funding is being cut, this collaboration is a perfect example of David Cameron's 'Big Society', where the private sector is demonstrating its business values by contributing to the growth and economic stability of local communities."
Jan Marshall, Director of Human Resources at JW Marriott Hotels said: "I am very proud to see how the young people have grown in confidence and developed their skills from the time we first met them. The assistance of ‘buddies’ from each of the participating departments has created a structured programme of learning and experiences so that the trainees can understand all aspects of working in a busy hotel environment. They all have real potential to succeed in the hospitality business in the future." 'Get into Hospitality' will see DLA Piper and the Prince's Trust build on the success already achieved through a similar skills based initiative - 'Get into Construction', a UK programme which has been running for the past 5 years. 'Get into Construction', was initially launched with DLA Piper's construction partners to address the skills shortage facing the construction industry, however this has now grown to include 31 industry leaders. Of the 1, 5 00 young people who have participated in these two week training courses, 96% were unemployed at the outset, but 75% have since gone on to employment or further education or training, a remarkable achievement. |
